Fundamental Manufacturing Processes, Plastic Injection Molding

Description
Injection molding is the most common method of producing parts out of plastic material. It is an extremely versatile process that is capable of producing parts with a wide range of attributes. Using shop floor footage and animated sequences this video focuses on the injection molding machine and the injection mold to illustrate the injection molding process. The injection machine section covers in detail both the machines’ injection system and the clamping system. In step by step progression, plastic material is followed from it’s raw material state through the melting process and onto it’s injection into the mold. Throughout the sequence, various components of the injection machine are explained. The mold section continues this examination, allowing clear definition of mold terms as the molten material is formed, cooled, and ejected as the final part. also featured in the mold segment are the common mold types, including the two-plate cold runner mold, three-plate cold runner mold, the hot runner mold, and the insulated runner mold. this tape concludes with a section on injection machine controls. Here, the role of computers in daily shop floor activities is augmented with an examination of computer aided injection mold and part design.

Precision Injection Molding: Process, Materials, and Applications

Product Description
One of the key aspects of the production of high precision components via injection molding technology is the need to meet extremely tight dimensional tolerances, often in the submicron range, and maintain these tolerances over the practical lifetimes of the molded articles. In addition, as many of the precision components are utilized in various optoelectronic systems and devices, control of optical and electrical properties is often crucial. The strict control of dimensional and electro-optical properties requires a systematic reexamination of the conventional injection molding process with special consideration of its impact on these attributes of the molded article. This volume examines precision injection molding from different perspectives, covering materials, process, mold and machine aspects of the technology, with special emphasis on factors affecting the dimensional integrity and stability of the molded components. It attempts to combine theoretical modeling and application oriented approaches and present the current state of understanding of this complex and critical manufacturing technology. Special topics covered in this volume include: mechanisms of dimensional instability of molded plastics, models for prediction of warpage and shrinkage, crystallization phenomena in injection molding, process control, optical disc molding, micro-molding and micro-structure replication for microfluidics.

What is the typical time for a mold to open/close in an injection molding process?

The mold is relatively small. It is only a 3 or 4 inch cube. Even a rough estimate will be fine. I’m looking for the time it takes the mold to open. And the time it would take to eject a simple part would be great too. I’m assuming it’s only a couple seconds but any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I don’t have the machine. This is for a school project.

Injection Molding Basics – Process (excerpt)

This excerpt discusses Material Preparation and handling of plastics, including mixing of plastic material and additives (such as impact modifiers, fillers, flame retardants, mold release agents, plasticizers, reinforcements, heat stabilizers, lubricants and colorants), using dessicant dryers for material drying and dew meters for evaluating the moisture content of a plastic material. Our Injection Molding Basics series provides participants with a general understanding of the three major aspects of injection molding; the injection molding machine, the molding process, and the injection mold. These programs use 3D animation to demonstrate the inner workings of the machine and mold and to easily convey otherwise complex concepts. Important safety precautions are stressed throughout these training programs. A. Routsis Associates – Complete Training Solutions for the Plastics Industry.
